DSI-NRF SARChI Chairs available for expert commentary on 2023 Matric Results.

Two Research Chairs under the South African Research Chairs Initiative (DSI-NRF SARChI) are available to offer expert commentary relating to the 2023 Matric Results. The DSI-NRF SARChI Chairs are experts and leading researchers in their respective academic disciplines. Professor Mahlapahlapana Themane, Research Chair in Schools as Enabling Environments; and Associate Professor Anthony Essien, Interim Numeracy Chair will be available for media interviews following the release of the results.

Professor Themane is based at the University of Limpopo’s School of Education and his extensive research focused on schools as an enabling space for learner success, inclusive education and curriculum theory.

Associate Professor Essien is based at the University of the Witwatersrand, where is Associate Professor in Mathematics Education. His areas of research include teacher education and mathematics education. 

Over 150 Research Chairs have been awarded across the country’s universities since the establishment of the initiative in 2006. The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) designed to attract and retain excellence in research and innovation at South African public universities through the establishment of Research Chairs at public universities in South Africa with a long-term investment trajectory of up to fifteen years. The main goal of the Research Chairs initiative is to strengthen and improve research and innovation capacity of public universities for producing high quality postgraduate students and research and innovation outputs.
