Woman and Her Children Hospitalized as Thunderstorm Wreaks Havoc in Mashite Village
A mother and her two children were taken to the hospital after being struck by a severe thunderstorm in Mashite Village, located in Limpopo province
A severe hailstorm swept through Mashite village near Lebowakgomo in Limpopo, causing significant destruction and leaving residents struggling to recover.
Among the injured are a woman and her two children, who are currently being treated in hospital after being struck by debris when the storm tore the roof off their home.
Community members are in distress as many homes have been damaged, and they lack the means to repair them.
A resident shared his experience of rushing to his brother's home, only to find the family injured and the roof gone.
"My car windows are shattered too. We are appealing to the government for immediate help," he pleaded, speaking on behalf of his neighbors who also suffered similar losses.
Human Settlements MEC, Basikopo Makamu, acknowledged the extent of the devastation and assured residents that efforts were underway to provide emergency relief.
"We did have plans, but we never expected it to impact areas like this. We are mobilizing support to ensure families like this one receive an emergency structure today," said Makamu.
He emphasized that while immediate help was coming, longer-term solutions would be coordinated to assist affected families in rebuilding.
The tragedy in Mashite underscores the vulnerability of rural communities to extreme weather events and the urgent need for robust disaster response plans.
