Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene has strongly decried that the SAPS will not tolerate acts of violence against those who serve and protect.

According to a report yesterday at around 23:00, members of SAPS Kwazakele were on their way to a complaint when they were stopped by members of the public in Kubo Street, Zwide informed them of  robbery in progress at local tavern .  When the police arrived, the suspects, who were getting into the hijacked vehicle, started shooting at them.  Members returned fire and the suspects retreated and fled.  Another suspect, about 25 years old, died from gunshot wounds at the scene.

The police sergeant, 31, suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and fingers.  He was taken to hospital and is in stable condition.

A 9mm handgun, cellphone and stolen alcohol were found in the vehicle.  The car, a Ford Eco was seized from one of the patrons from the tavern.

A case of commercial burglary, auto theft, attempted murder (attack on police) and an investigation docket were opened for further investigation.

Lt Gen Mene extended his best wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured Sergeant.  “The bravery of the officers present in the line of duty, is commendable.  We warn criminals that any acts of violence, particularly through attacks on our police officers, will be dealt with immediate and decisive action.  Law enforcement is committed to ensuring public safety and will not tolerate crimes against officers or the public,” warned Lt Gen Mene.
