KwaZulu-Natal Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is said to have rebuked, in the strongest terms following the arson and stoning of police vehicles at Bottlerush in Chatsworth yesterday.

Police officers who are members of the eThekwini District Task Force were on the trail searching for wanted murder suspects.

While police chasing suspects on foot, a group of citizens allegedly turned up and burnt a police car to ashes and pelted another with stones.  Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi said the waste of police resources was a serious direct attack on government authority and that no stone would be left unturned in pursuit of those responsible.

"Members of the public are constantly complaining about the lack of police resources, which is a real concern, but there are those who want to cripple the police service so they can continue their reign of terror."  Arson and stoning of police vehicles is a serious crime and," said Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi.

However, the burning of police vehicles did not deter police from arresting wanted suspects.  Two suspects were arrested and were found in possession of two firearms and air rifle. The arrested suspects will appear in court soon.
